What actually makes a character rare?

Rarity is not the same as Gold vs Metal. A character becomes genuinely difficult to build when the first copy is restricted, direct promotion is unavailable, copies depend on rotating Online Battle seasons, or the card is tied to limited packs.

That distinction matters because obtaining one copy and reaching Elite X are completely different challenges.

Some of the most restricted characters

• Batman / Dawn of Justice — frequently cited by long-time players as one of the most heavily paywalled cards because additional copies are difficult to obtain through normal free progression.
• Batman / Arkham Knight — the initial legitimate unlock is unusually restrictive; community discussions continue to treat him as one of the hardest cards to obtain normally.
• Deathstroke / Red Son — another card repeatedly mentioned in current community discussions when players talk about characters with highly limited acquisition routes.
• The Flash / Blackest Night — not necessarily paywalled, but Online Battle rotation and the number of copies needed make high promotion a long project.
• Ares / Prime — strongly tied to Online Battle rotation, so missing the season can mean waiting a long time for another copy opportunity.

Rare does not automatically mean strongest

Some rare cards are excellent, but collection rarity and competitive strength are separate things. A common, well-built carry with excellent gear can outperform a rare card that does not fit the team.

If your goal is performance, compare passive, role and gear synergy. If your goal is collection completion, acquisition difficulty matters much more.

• No direct promotion means every Elite level requires another physical copy.
• Online Battle cards depend on the season returning and your final ranking.
• Limited-pack cards may only appear during specific store rotations.
